Assessing the suitability of Tow Vehicles

 

With a 5th wheeler, more weight is transferred to the tow vehicle itself (compared to a conventional caravan - nence the improved stability) and so we need to ensure the principles shown in the Towing Mass Guide are compiled with.  

 

GVM. Gross Vehicle Mass    

1. The tow vehicle has the capacity to carry this extra load - more specifically that its Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) is not exceeded when the 5th wheeler is attached.  

 

ATM. Aggregate Traler Mass  

2. The ATM is the maximum allowable laden mass of the 5th wheeler and includes the 5th wheeler itself, plus its contents like water, gas, food, cloths etc. (much like the GVM of the vehicle)
